Southern Ontario Beginner's Guide to Gardening

Gardening is fun and rewarding and can provide you with fresh fruit, herbs and lovely flowers. If you are new to gardening, and not sure where to start, we are here to help!

Tips for starting a garden:

Starting a garden begins with picking the correct place. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Vegetables need easy water access. This spot should receive at least 6 hours of sun per day

After choosing your garden spot, determine what to cultivate. Assess your gardening goals, space, and time commitment. Start with tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers. Marigolds, zinnias, and sunflowers are easy-to-grow flowers.

Remove weeds, pebbles, and rubbish before planting. Compost or other organic materials improve soil fertility and structure. Test your soil's pH and nutrients.

After soil preparation, plant your garden. Follow the planting recommendations for each plant and space them for growth. Always water and fertilize your plants.

Tend your garden throughout the growing season to ensure its success. Water, fertilise, and weed your garden regularly. If necessary, use organic pesticides.

Start your first garden in southern Ontario with a little planning and preparation. Start small and choose easy-to-grow plants. Good gardening!
